2014 Winter Olympics

The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, will be held from 7 to 23 February 2014, in Sochi, Russia, with some events in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana. There will be ninety-eight events in fifteen winter sports. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games are being organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee (SOC).

The host city, Sochi was selected on 4 July 2007 during the 119th IOC Session in Guatemala City, defeating bids from Salzburg, Austria; and Pyeongchang, South Korea. The Olympics in Sochi are the first Winter Olympics for the Russian Federation, as the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow were in the Soviet Union.

Preparation for the Games involves the building of new venues; and modernizing the telecommunications, power, and transport infrastructure of the area. This will include the construction of a new Olympic Park by the Black Sea coast in the Imeretin Valley, with venues clustered around a central area. In Krasnaya Polyana the venues will also be new.

The Olympic Games in Sochi will be holding events in 15 disciplines of 7 winter sports: biathlon; bobsleigh: bobsleigh and skeleton; curling; ice hockey; luge; skating: figure skating, short track speed skating and speed skating; skiing: alpine, cross country, nordic combined, ski jumping, freestyle and snowboard. The 2014 Winter Olympics promises to be a magnificent Games, providing an irresistible mix of winter sport, culture and hospitality.
